Falmouth in Afghanistan Race
Published on Thursday, August 07, 2008
The CIGNA Falmouth Road Race mirror race was held this past week at Camp Mike Spann, Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan. PO3 Megan E. Kennedy, USN (front row, second from left) was the founder and organizer of the event. Megan, from East Falmouth, Mass., had never run in the home town Falmouth Road Race, but wanted to add a run to a base-wide event.
Megan contacted the race early in the summer about doing an event at her base. The Falmouth race officials were very pleased to partner in this event. The Afghanistan event had to take place so that it fit into operations schedule at Camp Mike Spann. The Falmouth race sent her shirts and special bib numbers for the event.
Megan figured perhaps 25-30 people would take part. But as the event got closer and more and more people came back to camp those who said they would run increased. Eventually, last week some 57 participants, for more than several countries and branches of service, ran in the event which had to be delayed for two days due to an unplanned sand storm. The race was also run in the usual hot steamy weather that is normal for the region.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
Congratulations to all who participated. Thank you Megan Kennedy!!! Megan is scheduled to leave Afghanistan shortly to return to her home base in Virginia, and then to see her family in East Falmouth.
